In 2020, Port Kembla Golf Club engaged the services of Australian Professional golfer Craig Parry to provide a report with recommendations on changes to the golf course. This would help to increase  enjoyment and improve playability, as well as reducing maintenance tasks. 

The Club’s main aim was to modify the golf course to reduce the difficulty for higher handicappers, without affecting our lower handicappers or compromising the integrity of the course design. Craig Parry’s report provided 30 recommendations on improvements, which mainly covered reshaping of specific fairways and the  reshaping and/or removal of specific bunkers. Over one very busy week in September 2020, our Course Maintenance team, along with a dedicated group of volunteers, completed works on 13 of the Club’s 18 holes.

In 2021, Craig Parry continued his engagement with the Club to complete a report on all of the course bunkers to improve accessibility for golfers, as well as creating safe access for mechanical bunker maintenance equipment. The completion of this work has made our course even more accessible for both our players with a disability or for any of our players that are a little less mobile, while also allowing us to utilise machinery to maintain all of the bunkers on the course and remove the requirement to manually rake them.

This shot highlights the redeveloped approach to the 3rd green. A miss short right or left will require a nice touch to save par. A miss left or right at pin height will challenge your bunker skills.

Removal of both bunkers short left and right of the green has opened up the approach shot.

A hole with plenty of sand. Recent redevelopments saw the removal of a bunker front right. You’ll still need a good touch to save par from that spot. The removal of the Lomandra in front of the teeing ground combined with the removal of the bunker short right of the green has increased the strategic options.

Another redeveloped area. A very long Par 3. You can still make out the outline of the old bunker shape and size at the front left corner of the green. Golfers now have the opportunity to run one up to the pin. Accuracy is still the challenge.

Removal of Lomandra in front of the tee provides a clear line of sight to the green. The deletion of one and reshaping of the other left green side bunker has widened the landing zone.
